Student Success Tips

What type of student would thrive in an online environment?

Students must demonstrate self-discipline in their work habits, embrace academic rigor, and maintain a growth mindset. Below are the top 10 tips from students who have succeeded in their virtual learning journey!

1. Create a Dedicated Learning Space
Set up a quiet, organized area where you can focus and minimize distractions. Turn off notifications, put your phone away, and focus during learning time.

2. Stick to a Consistent Schedule
Log in daily, set a routine, and treat your online classes like in-person school. Many student choose to focus on one content area per day (ex: ELA on Monday, Math on Tuesday…)

3. Stay on Pace
Use your Pace Chart to keep track of assignment due dates and avoid falling behind—small, consistent progress is key.

4. Check Your Course Daily
Review teacher announcement pages in Educator, messages in Educator, and feedback to stay informed and on track.

5. Communicate with Your Teacher
Reach out when you have questions or need support—your teacher is there to help you succeed.

6. Take Notes and Stay Organized
Be sure to take notes and write down key ideas from the content you are learning. Be sure to have a notebook for each course.

7. Participate Actively
Engage in discussions, attend live sessions if available, and ask questions.

8. Stay Motivated
Set goals, celebrate small wins, and remind yourself why your education matters.

9. Use Available Resources
Take advantage of tutoring, help sessions, and course tools provided in your platform.

10. Practice Digital Responsibility
Submit your own work, follow guidelines, and use technology appropriately. Be sure to review our Academic Integrity policy.

Part-Time Options

Students have the option to enroll part time at SJVS. In this model, students take SJVS courses during the school day in a lab at their school of attendance or after school as an additional course. If you are looking to have your child take a SJVS course during the school day, the first step is to contact your child’s guidance counselor for placement, advisement and approval.

As an additional reminder, all standard policies in the student progression plan, including school based course request/registration and drop/add policies, apply to virtual courses.

Full-Time Options

St. Johns Virtual School is a district school of choice. This means that students must apply and be accepted to SJVS. Acceptance is based on prior student grades, test scores, and student attendance. Full-time students must complete a minimum of 6 courses per semester and comply with all state course standards and assessment requirements.

Our selective process is grounded in the belief that if a student is not successful in the Full-Time program or decides to withdraw, it can significantly disrupt their graduation timeline.

Enrollment windows will open in April of each year. A second enrollment window, for second semester, will open in late November/early December.
